“Remu Raitanen, a hard worker, no-nonsense guy. Stoic but tough, stretches the floor for us on the offensive end, and a sneaky good defender.”

Kyle Smith | Head Coach, San Francisco Dons

“Remu is a skilled four-man from Europe. He embodies a lot about what our program is, which is having a great character, being a great student, and always putting the team infront of oneself — and he does that on a daily basis.”

About Remu

Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, the second-generation basketball player was first introduced to the sport at a young age. Remu spent his early years playing for his hometown team Torpan Pojat and later for HBA-Märsky, Finland’s leading youth basketball program. In addition, Remu was actively involved with Finland’s junior national teams, totaling 36 games before age 18. Then, in 2016 he packed his bags and moved to San Francisco, where he studied and played for the University of San Francisco. He graduated after four years, earning a WCC all-academic-first-team selection. In 2020, Raitanen played his debut men’s national basketball game against Estonia, scoring 15 points — the highest debut game points in Finland since 2008. After two years of rapid improvement in Korisliiga, the top professional basketball league in Finland, Remu was chosen as the Korisliiga player of the year 2022.

Characterized as reliable, humoristic, and honest, Remu has always had a passion for basketball. “You can always rely on Remu to come through when he’s needed. He is one of the hardest-working people I know”, says Miku, Remu’s older brother. “No matter how hard he worked, he always had a joyful glow to him. It’s the type of natural happiness that spreads easily. With a mentality like his, I always knew he would make it far in life, whatever he’d choose to do — I’m just happy to witness first-hand his dreams come to fruition.”

As a basketball player, Remu values his teammates, and he makes sure they know it both on and off the court. Remu appreciates a fair, straightforward coach who prioritizes teamwork and shares Remu’s love for the game of basketball.
